Gladys was born to William and Ethel Rockwell in Brainard, MN on January 9, 1903. She was the oldest of six children with two sisters, Mena and Pearl, two brothers Bud and Joe and a sister Kitty who was six weeks old when she died. In 1909, they moved to Bonners Ferry, ID where she attended Paradise Valley School. In 1916, they moved to Alberta, Canada. She met and married Thomas Armstrong in 1922. After marriage, she and her husband returned to live in Bonners Ferry. They had three children: Kathleen, Mary and Bob. Her husband Thomas died in 1930.
In 1938, she married Harry Dunn of Bonners Ferry. They had a daughter Bette. In 1958, Harry preceded her in death. Two daughters Kathleen and Mary, her son Bob, stepson Jerry and granddaughters, Kitty Fiske and Roxanne Rutz and her grandson Tim Fiske also preceded her in death. Her daughter Bette, eight grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, eighteen great-great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces survive her.
