John Robert Groff, 93 of Centralia, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2016 at SSM Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL.

He was born August 14, 1922 in Harvey, IL the son of Elmer and Rose Groff. He married Dolores Puffer on February 7, 1942 in Springfield, MO and she preceded him in death on December 21, 2007.

He is survived by three children: Robert Groff and special friend Darlene Goodin of Centralia, Dolores Joann Johnson and husband Earl of Central City, John Groff and wife Theresa of Junction City, IL; three grandchildren: James Groff of Centralia, Clem Harriss of St. Louis, MO. and Mary Jane Williams of Centralia; three great-grandchildren: Gregory Harriss, Joshua Williams and Ryan Williams, all of Centralia.

John is preceded in death by his wife, parents, four brothers: Harold Groff, Richard Groff, Alvin Groff and Art Groff, a daughter Martha Jane Williams and a son Roger Bryan Groff.

John served in the Army during WW II. He is a member of the VFW Post 2055. He worked at Valley Steel in Centralia as a Machine Operator. He enjoyed hunting, handyman work and loved working on lawnmowers. Most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Funeral Services for John R. Groff will be held Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Pastor Steve Upchurch officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Centralia. Military Rites will be accorded at the gravesite by the American Legion Post 446 and the VFW Post 2055.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Heart Association and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 N Sycamore Centralia, IL 62801, who is assisting the family with arrangements.
