Dorothy Karnes Cherry, 85, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock. Celebration of Life services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, nov. 18, 2006, at the Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Denton, Texas. Interment will be a private ceremony at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Denton.

Dorothy was born in Green Valley, Texas, to the late Clarance and Lillie Springer Maxwell. She graduated from high school in Denton, attended North Texas State Teachers College, and completed her Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education at The University of Connecticut. She married John Karnes, Jr. in 1941. In 1966, Dorothy was the first teacher hired at Waco's McLennan Community College. In 1971, she married Scott Cherry. She retired from community college teaching in 1970, to assist Scott in building their library furniture distributorship for North and West Texas. She was an accomplished oil painter and enjoyed all forms of art. Dorothy and her husband, Scott were active in the Cowboy Artist of America Museum in Kerrville. An avid reader, Dorothy instilled a love of reading in her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Karnes Jr.; second husband, Scott Cherry; and her brother, Billy Tom Maxwell.

She is survived by sons, Merle Karnes and wife, Anna, of Lubbock and John Karnes and wife, Saundra, of Waco; grandchildren, Lisa Davila and husband, David, of Houston, James Karnes, of Conroe, and Caley Cooper and husband, Val, of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Marissa Davila, of Houston and Caitlyn and Creed Cooper, of Lubbock.
