  • The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Clarence A. Crowell (ASN: 551763), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, A.E.F., near Counigis, France, 15 July 1918. Private First Class Crowell carried messages from his company and battalion headquarters over routes swept by heavy artillery fire. Due to the individual gallantry of this runner, communication was maintained during the terrific bombardment which preceded the German attack on the Marne.
