Mary Lee Johnson, 83, died at Clovis hospital Wednesday evening, Sept. 20, 1989 following a lengthy illness.

She was born . . . to the home of James and Nettie Cyphers. She came with her family from Buffalo Gap, TX. to a homestead in the Benson Community of Roosevelt County in a covered wagon in the year 1908.

She attended school in Benson and also in Portales. The family moved to Alamogordo, then to Slaton, Tx. and Abernathy Tx.

It was in Portales on August 12, 1927 that she was married to Jack Johnson. They came to Portales to make their home in 1928.

She was employed during WWII at the Portales Post Office and later at the university's post office, until her retirement in 1967.

She is survived by her husband, two daughters, seven grand children, and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, John W. Cyphers of Ukiah, CA, a sister, Marcella Mask of Portales; and a number of other near relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Dorothy Geraldine.

Services will be Saturday, Sept. 23, 1989 at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Herbert Bergstrom and Rev. Al Staggs officiating. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery.
