Young Hawk was a Sahnish-Arikara scout at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, June 25, 1876. He first became a scout at the age of 17 and enlisted a second time at 20. When the Battle of the Little Big Horn began ten scouts were sent with Reno, and Young Hawk was one of those scouts. Reno was killed and a few other scouts killed but Young Hawk and other scouts made it to the Bluffs and a few days later made it to safety.
