John Edward Vogt was a bookkeeper. He married Leonore Hagedorn, also a child of immigrants from Germany, on September 30, 1896 in what was then known as Berlin and is now Kitchener. They had three sons: Charles, Ernest and George Theodore. Leonore died in 1911 at the age of 37 when George Theodore was just nine years old. John Edward Vogt married Anna Schaefer (1882-1952) in Berlin (Kitchener) on October 7, 1913. Their son, Harold Vogt, was born in 1917.

The Vogt family were charter members of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Kitchener, Ontario where there is a stained glass window in memory of John Edward Vogt.
