Son of Paolo Mancini and Rita Lotti, Paolo Maria was a twin brother of Giangiacomo Antonio, whom both died shortly after the murder of their father after swearing vengeance on his killers to defend family honor. Rita, influenced by the peacemaking example of her parents, pledged Paolo to forgive his killers but faced a steep challenge however in convincing her sons to do the same. Tradition has it that she often pointed out to them the image of the crucified Christ and the fact that he forgave those who killed him. Within a year, both sons succumbed to a deadly illness.

The remaining story of their mother needs no introduction: seeking religious life, she was ultimately accepted in the Augustinian convent at Cascia where she remained until her death in 1456. Hailed as the Patroness of Impossible Causes, she is one of the most known and devoted female saints worldwide.
