NEWPORT NEWS - Archie L. Avant, 58, of 241 Pine Ave., Newport News, died at 2:30 a.m. Friday at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. after an illness of several months.

Mr. Avant was owner and operator of Avant Termite Control Co. here. A native of Marion, S.C., he has been a resident of Newport News for 21 years. He was a member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ada Avant of the home; two sons, A. Calvin Avant and Robert Earl Avant, both of Newport News; seven daughters, Mrs. F. A. Jenkins of Stoneham, Mass., Mrs. G. L. Andrews and Mrs. J. R. Field, both of Hampton, Va., Mrs. V. T. Smoot, Mrs. M. D. Hill and Miss Cathy Avant, all of Newport News and Mrs. Linda Lasswell of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, W. L. Avant of Hampton, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. E. L. Hill of Newport News and Mrs. W. D. Cox of Billings, Mont.; and 19 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. from Ivy Memorial Baptist Church here. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park here.
