Augusta- Stephen "Red" W. Spencer Sr., 74, passed away Dec. 12, 2015 at the Maine Veterans Homes in Augusta. He was born Dec. 28, 1940 in Strong, the son of Everett R. and Ethel M. (Palmer) Spencer.
He was educated in local area schools and graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1960. On Dec. 14, 1963 he married Beverly Nason in Farmington. He was a veteran who proudly served his country in the US Coast Guard from 1960-1966 until his honorable discharge.
Stephen spent many years of his life as a self-employed contractor, with the most enjoyable years spent owning the Amaco Station on Route 1 in Saco. He was active in many civic and community organizations including being a former Post Commander of the VFW in Scarborough, member of the American Legion Post 76, a member of Winnecook Christian Church, and a leader of the Royal Rangers. He enjoyed NASCAR, fishing, hunting, and spending time with grandkids and family.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Beverly (Nason) Spencer of Burnham; three sons, Stephen Spencer Jr, and wife Joleen of Winslow, Christopher Spencer and wife Lorie of Roanoake, VA, James Spencer and wife Annette of Saco, two daughters, Deborah (Spencer) Eason and husband Scott of Lakeland, FL., Danielle (Spencer) Cross and husband Kevin of Pittsfield; Mother, Ethel Weeks of Farmington, stepmother, Nancy Spencer of Saco, seven brothers, three sisters, 21 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; many other family members. He was predeceased by his father Everett Spencer; a son, Matthew Peter "Mighty Mouse".
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Dec 18, 2015 at Winnecook Christian Church at 11 am with Pastor Merle Mitchell officiating. Arrangements under the care of Dan & Scott's Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road Skowhegan, Maine 04976.
