Marine Lance Cpl. Scholl was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Scholl died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations in Haditha. He was riding in an armor-outfitted vehicle when an improvised explosive device exploded. Michael lived in Burwell and Crete when he was young, but grew up in the Lincoln, Nebraska, Air Park neighborhood. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 2002 and worked at McDonald's near the airport and a convenience store. He loved fast cars and was active in a Lincoln car club called Camaros Inc. He studied briefly at Southeast Community College in Milford before fulfilling a longtime goal by joining the Marines in 2003. He had been denied enlistment at first because he was diagnosed with a kidney condition as a toddler, but he overcame several hurdles to obtain a medical waiver. Michael was in Afghanistan from summer 2005 to January 2006 and could have gotten out of the assignment to Iraq because of knee surgery in April, but he chose to go. The young Marine never got to see or hold his daughter born October 11, but he did talk and sing "You Are My Sunshine" to the baby while she was still in the womb. He also recorded himself telling stories to her, just in case. He leaves behind his wife, Melissa, and a young daughter. Michael had an ornery, mischievous sense of humor but his fellow soldiers remember a phenomenal Marine. The young soldier had saved many lives during a battle in October. He was a machine gunner, part of a tough unit called "hammer", "knock out punch" and "rescue unit". When things got bad, they would call them in.
