Tragedy occurs on his farm, 11 miles northeast of Springfield Friday Noon
The body of Robert Bodkin, 84, of New Carlisle, was found in a burning brush pile on his farm 11 miles northeast of Springfield in the Springfield pike at noon, Friday by J. D. Funderburgh,, a neighbor. The upper part of his body was burned to crisp.
Bodkin is thought to have been overcome by the heat eminating from the burning brush and to have toppled over into it. Judging from the time he was last seen alive, Bodkin's body must have been in the brush pile about 2 hours before it was found.
The dead man who lived with his son, John Bodkin, in New Carlisle, left home Friday morning to clean out the under growth which had grown up over the last fall and winter on his farm.
Nine children survive him including the one with whom he lived. They are: Robert, of Springfield, William, John and Charles of New Carlisle, Mrs Glenn Smith, Mrs Samuel Ulery, Mrs Emerson Grisso, and Mrs Levi West all living in the vicinity of New Carlisle, and Mrs Harvey Leffew of Springfiled.
Mr Bodkin had lived in the neighborhood where his farm is located all his life.
Dr. Detrick of New Carlisle was called when the body was found and Coronor Theodore Schaefer was notified.
