The son of Joseph & Alice Caldwell (Cunningham) Murphy, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although the 1863 draft registration has him living in York Borough.  He stood 5' 6" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 24, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 13 as a private with Co. E, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry.  When the regiment left for the field in June 1862, he was left behind sick in a Baltimore hospital and the following month deserted, allegedly going to Philadelphia.  He was never apprehended.
