A resident of Tracy for thirty years and a well known and highly respected man in the community, George Erbes, died at the age of 79 years at his home at 324 Emory Street on Tuesday morning. He was sick for two weeks, the cause of death being diabetes.

Funeral services were conducted at the Erbes home at 1:30 and the the Trinity Lutheran Church at Tracy at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. O. Lindekugel, parish minister, delivered the funeral sermon in which he paid final tribute to the aged man. Burial was in the Tracy cemetery where he was laid to rest in the family burial lot.

George Erbes was born at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on February 27, 1859. His father was a Civil War veteran and fought with the northern army. En route home from the civil war his father died, leaving George, his widowed mother, two sisters and one brother alone. His mother took the family, when George was twelve years of age, and moved from their Wisconsin home to Jackson county, Minnesota and took a homestead six miles east of Heron Lake. Here he grew to manhood and upon the death of his mother assumed management and ownership of the homestead farm. Upon leaving the farm thirty-five years ago, he moved to Truman and entered the hardware business with his son-in-law August Ebert. After rounding out five years in business he moved to Tracy in 1908 and entered retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Erbes resided at 436 Harvey Street for many years and moved to 324 Emory just a little over a year ago.

On May 17, 1880 he was united in marriage to Pauline Pietz and to this union eight children were born, all of whom survive except Delia who died twenty years ago during the influenza epidemic. The seven surviving sons and daughters are: Mrs. August Ebert, Truman; George and John, Tracy; Mrs. J.G. Purvis, Walnut Grove; Mrs. R.A. Weinkauf of Comfrey; Mrs. R.E. O'Connell of Marshall and Henry Erbes of Fulda, Minnesota.

Eight years ago on May 17th Mr. and Mrs. Erbes celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Fulda, where it was observed jointly with Mr. and Mrs. John Dobereiner. Fifty years ago on that date the two couples were united in marriage in a double ceremony in Jackson county.

Mr. Erbes as a young man took a prominent part in the community and the county in which he resided. For twelve successive years he was county commissioner for Jackson county. He also served various offices of trust on his respective township board. Mr. Erbes was vitally interested in the affairs of the state and the nation. In spite of his age he was keenly interested in national politics. For years he served as an election judge in the first ward locally.

Born and confirmed in the German Lutheran faith he remained true to his church. His name was found in the roster of active members until incapacitated by advanced age. He was highly respected in the Tracy community and was regarded as a gentleman and a splendid citizen.
