Pleasant Andrew "P.A." Buntin, a native Kentuckian, came to Clarendon in 1887 when the Ft. Worth and Denver City Railroad completed service to Clarendon and in 1899 established the first funeral home in the area. Buntin was born on March 7, 1849 in Kentucky, came to the panhandle in 1885 and located at Mobeetie. The railroad brought him and his family to Clarendon two years later. One of his enterprises was the operation of the first dairy in Clarendon, located on the Sawyer farm just north of Clarendon. He also owned and operated the mail route from Clarendon to Silverton. This route went through Palo Duro to Schott's Gap and up the steep caprock requiring two changes of teams for the hacks. One change was made at the Gap and the other at Palo Duro. P.A. Buntin was a charter member of the Masonic lodge and at the time of his death he was the last surviving charter member of the Methodist Church.
