Ruth Owen, 82, a life-long resident of Skagit Valley, died in Mount Vernon on June 28, 2016, four months to the day after her husband of 62 years, Harry Owen, died.

Ruth was born in Mount Vernon on June 13, 1934, to Swan and Karolina Olson. She was the youngest of five kids.

Ruth graduated from Mount Vernon High School with the class of 1952. She worked as most valley kids did in the fields and local canneries. She attended Mount Vernon Beauty School and became a beautician, eventually opening Cedar Crest Beauty Salon on 12th Street in Mount Vernon. Mom made many life-long friends and loyal customers through her more than 20 years in business.

Ruth met Harry Owen while he was stationed at NAS Whidbey. They were married on February 12, 1954. They had two kids, Cathy and Michael. Ruth raised them with the help of her parents and family until dad retired from the Navy in 1969. Mom's favorite times were spent with her granddaughter and great-grandsons. She also enjoyed family gatherings and playing Swedish card games. Mom and dad took several trips to Reno and enjoyed visiting relatives in Utah and Idaho. They took a memorable trip to Canada with family and also to California and Nevada with Cathy and Holly.

Ruth is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Lisa Owen; granddaughter Holly Knott; great grandsons Kole and Nathan Knott; her sister Kristina Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harry, daughter Cathy, brother Leo Olson, and sisters Olga Babcock and Liz Johnson.

As per mom's wishes, there will be no funeral service. A gathering in remembrance of mom and dad will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Vasa Lodge, 1805 Cleveland Street, Mount Vernon.

Mom was a long-time member of the First Lutheran Church and wanted her ashes to be put to rest in the memorial garden. A portion of mom's ashes will be mixed with dad's and scattered at Deception Pass by the family.
