Death of a Confederate Veteran.
J. H. McGuffin, one of Oconee's oldest and best citizens, died at his home near Westminster on Saturday, January 8th, after an illness of nearly six weeks. He was the oldest son of the late Rev. A. W. McGuffin. Mr. McGuffin was born in this county in 1836. He was a Christian man, a kind neighbor and friend. He had been a consistent member of the Baptist church for a number of years, having joined the church on Sullivan's Island during the Civil' War.
On December 29, 1859. Mr. McGuffin and Miss Sarah Emily Jenkins were happily married. To this union six children were born. He leaves a wife, two sons, W. H. and A. McGuffin, of Westminster, and Mrs. Mary Pelfrey, of Pickens; two brothers, A. L. and T. F. McGuffin, and one sister. Mrs. M. J. Harbin, to mourn his death. He leaves a number of friends in this community who join the bereaved ones in their sorrow.
The remains were laid to rest Sunday evening in the Old Westminster cemetery. Burial services were conducted by Rev. A. P. Marett.
A precious one from us has gone;
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled
The boon His love had given,
And though the body slumbers here,
The soul ls safe in heaven.
A Friend.
