Sarah was my sister's step-daughter. She was born with a rare genetic and neurological/developmental disorder known as Rett Syndrome. There is no known cure for this disorder. She was non-verbal and required full time care.
Rett Syndrome affects one in every 10,000 to 15,000 live female births. It does not discriminate among racial or ethnic groups and is found worldwide.
This doesn't appear to be a disorder that affects boys. If it does, boys don't tend to live beyond 2 years old.
October is Rett Syndrome Awareness month. Please don't wait for October to learn more about this devastating disorder and what you can do to help aid in research. Please check out the RettSyndrome organization to learn more and where 100% of donations are used in funding research.
