Edward P. Cole, 79, singer; performed on stage, TV with many leading groups
CARVER - Edward P. Cole, 79, of Carver, a former professional singer on radio, stage, and television, died Tuesday in Jordan Hospital in Plymouth.
Mr. Cole's career spanned many decades. In the 1940s and 1950s, he performed in New York City with the Paul Whitman Show and the Robert Shaw Chorale. He also performed in the Broadway hit musical "High Button Shoes."
He was a regular on the Arthur Godfrey TV show, singing in a group known as the Toppers.
Mr. Cole sang in the 1970s with a male barbershop chorus in Plainfield, N.J. and directed a Sweet Adeline chorus. He was a member of the Society of the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America.
After ending his professional singing career, he worked for J.W. Pierson of East Orange, N.J., until he retired at age 65.
Mr. Cole was a member of several church choirs including the Church of the Pilgrimage in Plymouth.
An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Cole was an administrative officer in the Rhineland and central Europe and a member of the American Legion.
He was born in Marshfield and grew up in Framingham. He graduated in 1938 from the Boston University School of Music.
He is survived by his wife, Jane (McClure) Cole; a son, LIVING; two daughters, LIVING; a sister, Sarah Hastings of Old Greenwich, Conn.; seven grandchildren, several nephews and a niece.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Church of the Pilgrimage, Town Square, Plymouth. Burial will be private.
