William A Barney 77, Gouveneur, native and former resident of Fort Covington died last Friday afternoon at the Edward John Noble hospital there where he had been a patient for a month. He had been ill since December and had undergone surgery.
The funeral was held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. James church. Surviving are two sisters, Miss Edith Barney, Gouverneur, and Miss Mary Martha Barney, Lisbon. A brother, James, died December 23, 1962. He was born September 17th, 1886, at Fort Covington, a son of Alexander Barney, and Martha Nora Barney.
He worked for Alcoa at Massena for several years and served with the army in World War 1. Mr. Barney went to Gouverneur in the early 1930s and operated the West Main hotel until its sale to Joseph Canaii in 1951. He had since been retired. He married the former Alice Cratton at Fort Covington. She died three years after their marriage.
