S. D. Baker, 78, Dies at Owensburg
Brother Shannon D. Baker, an ordained minister of the Church of Christ, died Wednesday afternoon at his home in Owensburg. He had been ill for two weeks. A minister for more than 60 years, Brother Baker was well-known in Monroe and Greene counties. He was 78 years old. The son of Wesley and Nettie Cox Baker, he was born April 21, 1872, in Martin county. He was ordained as a minister in 1891 and remained active in the ministry until his recent illness. In 1894 he was married to Algie Margaret Connel in Greene county. The wife survives him. They were the parents of two sons, Spencer Baker, Richmond and Dale Baker, Owensburg. Survivors include also four sisters, Mrs. Alive Lehman, Owensburg; Miss Laura Baker, Bedford, Mrs. Iva Graham, Terre Haute, and Mrs. Pearl Reed, Christopher, Ill.; two grandson, Otis Baker, Geneseo, Ill., and Robert Baker, Indianapolis, one great grandson, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ in Owensburg. The body will remain at the Lehman funeral home until noon on saturday, when it will be taken to the church. Burial will be in Owensburg cemetery. --March 1, 1951.
