Utah artist, poet, writer, pioneer.

Upon converting to the LDS faith, Alfred and his family crossed the plains from St. Louis, Missouri, to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1866 via covered wagon as part of the John D. Holladay Company. A primarily self-taught painter, he chronicled the trek west through sketches and descriptive drawings. He formally began his artistic career by painting scenery for the Salt Lake Theater Company.

During his career, Alfred joined many expeditions to paint unexplored areas. He was among the first artists to explore and paint Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Yosemite. He also produced the first sketches of Zion Canyon, having accompanied a Brigham Young expedition party there.

In his later years, Alfred shifted from painting to writing. His works resulted in 14 books, which included reflections on nature and his life, as well as essays and volumes of poetry.

He married Wilhelmina Marie Williamson
in 1877, and they had the following children: Alfred Clarence, Franklin, Frederick, Martha Antoinette, Edith Julia, Lillian Ethel, and Minnie.

Two of his paintings, "The Hill Cumorah" and "Adam-ondi-Ahman," hang in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Alfred was the son of Martha (Wernham) and William Lambourne, Jr.
