Russell E. Cook, 94, of Chambersburg, died on July 4, 2016, at his apartment at Providence Place.
Born August 25, 1921 in Cashtown, Adams County, he was the son of the late E. Bright and Maude M. Kump Cook. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg.
Mr. Cook was a 1939 graduate of Gettysburg High School, and attended Thompson Business College, York, PA, and later took employment at the York Naval Ordnance Plant, continuing to work there until entering military service in 1942.
He was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army Air Corps. Service included duty assignments state-side at US Air Bases and on Tarawa and Guam in the South Pacific and at Hickam Field, Hawaii. Following discharge from the military in 1946, he became employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 1979 as Chief, Technical Service Office. In retirement he served in a variety of volunteer positions, including AARP Driver Training Instructor, APPRISE Counselor with the Franklin County Agency on Aging, and Meals-On-Wheels delivery. He enjoyed being with family and friends, traveling, reading, dancing, gardening, and oil painting.
Mr. Cook held life membership in Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599, Veterans of Foreign Wars Burt J. Asper Post 46, The American Legion, and B.P.O. Elks 600. He was also a member of AARP Chapter 2287, of which he was past president, NARFE Chapter 1063, and Franklin County Art Alliance.
His wife, Irene F. Martin Cook, whom he married on December 4, 1948 in Second Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, preceded him in death on October 16, 2014.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane Karper and husband Dr. C. Scott of Chambersburg, and Sharon Lehman and husband Dennis of Chambersburg; five grandchildren, Trevis Karper and wife Kimberly of Panama, Jesten Karper of Belize, Ben Lehman of Lancaster, PA, Matthew Lehman of Shelocta, PA, and Beth Lehman Vukman and husband Kevin of Blairsville, PA; five great-grandchildren, Weston Karper and Kai Karper both of Panama, Alivia Lehman of Shelocta, PA and Max Vukman and Harper Vukman both of Blairsville, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Dougal and Dolly St. Clair Cramer, and one brother, Floyd Cook.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 26 W. Commerce St., Chambersburg, PA 17201 on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Dr. Neal O. Hively officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Parklawns Memorial Gardens with graveside honors conducted by the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg.
