Dennis was born April 13, 1937, in Tuscola, the son of James and Sybil Baker Haney. He graduated from Arthur High School in 1955 and from the University of Illinois Air Institute in 1957. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1960. Dennis farmed and was named Mattoon Jaycee Outstanding Young Farmer in 1973 and also named Arthur Association of Commerce Outstanding Farmer in 1991. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, treasurer for 30 years, Sunday school teacher and trustee. He was a board member of the Coles-Moultrie Electrical Co-op, a member of Coles County Farm Bureau, served on the North Oak Township Board, and helped found Cooks Mills Fire Department.

Surviving are his wife; son, John Haney of Humboldt; daughters, Dee Stanford and husband Gerald of Mattoon and their children, James, Kim and Mark; Sharon Martz and husband Don of Quincy and their children, Greg and Sarah; three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
