Services will be Saturday, July 9, 10 a.m. at Macon Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon, TX. and graveside service at Monticello Cemetery. Officiating will be Bro. Gary Gage and Bro. Stephen Smith. Family visitation will be Friday, July 8, 6 -8 p.m. at Sam Harvey Funeral Home, Mt. Vernon, Texas.

Joe was born September 4, 1928 to F.L. (Shack) and Buena Bass in Franklin County, Texas. His parents were farmers and school teachers so Joe had a real appreciation for family, hard work and education. He started going to school with his mother in a one room school when he was 4 and he graduated in 1944 at the age of 15. At that time his family moved to St. Louis, Mo. where he met the love of his life, Nancy Lee Taylor. Their courtship lasted 3 years, even after his family moved back to Texas. When Nancy graduated from high school, he went back to St. Louis, married her and brought her to Texas. They recently celebrated their 69th anniversary.

Joe’s career path took many turns throughout his life. He first worked in the oil fields in west Texas. He felt the call to the ministry and decided to continue his education at Texas Tech University where he graduated in 1954. He began to teach mathematics, pastor his first church and start his seminary education at Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth. When his parents were in a severe car accident he ended his seminary education to care for them. He continued to teach while earning a Master’s of Science in Math Education from Southeastern Oklahoma University. In 1964, he moved his family to Franklin County which he always considered home. In Mt. Vernon he taught math at Mt. Vernon ISD and served as pastor of several area churches including, Calvary Baptist, Macon Baptist, New Hope Baptist, and Cypress Baptist. After he retired from teaching, he had a dairy farm and continued to pastor. Throughout his life, Joe mentored many lives both locally and across the state with a soft voice, strong values, and unyielding integrity. Those same values made him a wonderful father and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He leaves quite a legacy and will be remembered by many. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the joy of thy lord" Matthew 5:21.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, F.L. Bass and wife Beuna Newberry Bass; sister, Joy Marie, and brother, Roger Samuel. He is survived by his sweetheart of 72 years, Nancy; sons, Byron Bass and wife, SuFran, Tim Bass and wife, Martha, Brad Bass and wife, Jodi; daughters, Janeth Ellis and husband Jerry, Jerri Roemer, and Jolene Beaty and husband Russell; "adopted son of the heart", Saknarong Utsuhakel of Thailand; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
