Berend Lievers was born in December 1885 in the neighborhoodship of Lintelo, located in the extreme eastern part of the Netherlands, 3 km west of the village of Aalten, son of Jan Willem Lievers (25 years old, laborer) and Johanna Vrieze. Source: scan of his birth certificate, Familysearch.

The Lievers were Christian Reformed.

On 24 October 1907 carpenter Berend Lievers married in Aalten at the age of 21 years the three years older factory laborer Aaltjen Walvoort, daughter of Hendrikus Walvoort and Hanna Hendrika Kip.

On 9 April 1908 they had in Aalten a stillborn child, and on 18 April 1909 and 13 January 1911 daughters Johanna and Wilhelmina Hendrika, both named after their grandmothers. Their father Berend Lievers was in those years still a carpenter.

On 22 March 1911 the family Lievers emigrated from Aalten to Canada. They went first by train to Rotterdam, took a boat to Hull in England, by train again to Liverpool, where they boarded the S.S. Victorian of the Allan Line. After ten days at sea they landed on April 24, 1911 in Halifax. Then they went by train again via Winnipeg and Calgary to the city of Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province Alberta.

In Canada they had eight more children:
* Hendrika (Reka), 15 April 1913, Edmonton;
* Willem B. (Bill), 28 April 1915, Neerlandia;
* Hendrik B., 29 April 1916, Neerlandia;
* Johannes, 10 November 1917, Neerlandia, died 5 March 1919, Neerlandia;
* Stillborn, 18 June 1919, Neerlandia;
* Aaltje, 25 November 1920, Neerlandia;
* Ben, 17 March 1923, Neerlandia;
* Jan B. (John), 6 January 1925, Neerlandia.

In April 1913 his brother Hendrick (Henry) Lievers (24 years old, farmer), his wife Jansi (21), and their children Jan W (5), Gerharda (4) and Gerrit Jan (10 months) arrived on the ship Tunisian at Quebec, Canada. They first settled in Edmonton, where Berend (Ben) Lievers was then living. On the same ship sailed his younger brother Jan (John) Lievers (18, farmer), whose destination was also Edmonton. He returned during WW I to the Netherlands for service in the Dutch Army, but never went back to Canada.

In August/September 1914 they moved from Edmonton to Neerlandia, where Berend bought in winter 1912 a quarter (160 acres) of land, on which he had built a small log house.

The agrarian hamlet Neerlandia is located in central Alberta, Canada within the County of Barrhead, between Mellowdale and Vega, approximately 20 kilometers north of Barrhead and 60 miles northwest of the city of Edmonton, the capital of province Alberta. Neerlandia was founded by Dutch immigrants, beginning in 1911. The name "Neerlandia" refers to the first settlers' country of origin, the Netherlands. The surrounding area is largely agricultural based with many people in the out-lying area also being involved in construction and other trades as well.

In 1916 Ba?K Lievers (30 y, born in Holland), his wife Alice (32, Holland), their children Hanna (7, Holland), Mina (5, Holland), Reka (3, Holland [has to be: Alberta, Canada) and Bill (1, Alberta, Canada) were living in Township 62 [Neerlandia], Alberta, district Edmonton West.

His wife Aaltjen aka Alice died in November 1949 at the age of 66 years in Barrhead, Alberta, Canada. Berend aka Ben Lievers died there too, in January 1971 at the age of 85 years.
