John Alexander (Jack) Atchie, recently appointed general secretary of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, collapsed and died Monday shortly before noon at the Union Station baggage room. He was 58.
Mr. Atchie was talking to Fred Milks and Mr. Milks had gone to get some information for him. While he was gong Mr. Atchie was stricken. He was dead before the ambulance arrived.
Born in Kemptville, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Atchie, he came to Ottawa 40 years ago. For many years he had been an accountant for the CPR here. He was a local chairman of the Brotherhod of Railway Clerks here for the past 20 years.
He was on a leave of absence from CPR at the time of his d4eath.
He was a member of Eddy Lodge, AF and AM, IOOF, and the Chapter of Masons. He was on the Board of Stewards of Britannia Heights United Church.
He married Jean Roberts 4 years ago. She survives.
The Atchie residence is at 2674 Henley Street.
Also surviving are three brothers, Charles, Watertown NY; Thomas, Port Arthur; Thayer, Cochrane; and five sisters, Mrs. Barbara Brayshaw and Mrs. Irvin Anderson both of Toronto; Mrs. Dorothy Carter, Gravenhurst; Mrs. Frances Jackson, Syracuse NY, amd Mrs. Jemima Scott, Watertown NY.
The body is at the Hulse and Playfair funeral home. The funeral will be held in the chapel Thursday at 3pm. Rev. J. M. Derry officiating. Internment will be in Capital Memorial Gardens.
