An obituary appears in the Post Independent on January 12, 2015 (Glenwood Springs, CO).

Our beloved mother, Jan Garland, passed away from this life on Friday, January 9th, 2015, in Glenwood Springs, CO. She was born in Denver, CO., on July 24, 1942, to John & Bernice Gizewski. Jan was an educator, homemaker, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by her sister & brother-in-law Kathleen & Jim Patsey; 4 children: Carrie Oakes, Missy Crabtree, James Garland Jr., and Brian Garland; 9 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. Jan, although separated from her once husband James Garland, remained close friends with him to the end.

She had a unique spirit like no other — loving, beautiful, charismatic, determined, strong, silly, an offbeat sense of humor, and extremely sassy. God may have you in his arms, but we will always have you in our hearts.

A rosary will be held at Farnum Holt Mortuary on Wednesday, January 14th, at 7PM. A mass in celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, January 15th, 10:30 AM, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Silt, CO. Burial will be at the New Castle Cemetery following the service, and the wake will precede at the New Castle Community Center from 1230PM to 3:00PM.
