Nancy Adeline (Button Bailey) Spangler, 83, a resident of Milton her entire adult life, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2016, at the RiverWoods Nursing Care Center, Lewisburg, after a lengthy illness.
Nancy was born in Wellsboro, on May 12, 1933, a daughter of the late Henry and Frances (Benjamin) Button; and was fostered and eventually adopted by her aunt and uncle, the late Clyde and Edna (Button) Bailey.
An animated and adventuresome child, she was often seen riding her pony about town. "Button" as she was known became active in sports, music, theater, and cheerleading at Wellsboro High School, and graduated in 1951. She earned her associate's degree from Centenary College of New Jersey in 1953. Nancy married John M. Spangler Jr., on Sept. 6, 1953, in Wellsboro, and together raised three sons. She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother, always giving of time to her growing boys' activities - including serving as a den mother for Cub Scouts and an officer of the local Babe Ruth Baseball league. Nancy was an avid reader and expressive conversationalist. She had been active in bowling leagues and Bridge clubs, and exhibited a passion and talent for arts and crafts. Nancy organized and juried art shows, and hosted painting groups. A member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, Nancy achieved the status of Master Artisan. Her specialty was decorative painting on wood, metal, and gourds. For decades, she was the proprietor of The Country Corner, a crafts and antique shop first located in Eagles Mere and later in various co-ops - most recently in the Street of Shops in Lewisburg until 2015. Nancy belonged to the congregation of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Milton, where she was past member of the church choir and volunteer for children's Bible school.
Nancy was preceded in death by one infant brother, Henry Button; and one sister, Margaret (Bailey) Osgood.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Jr.; three sons, Matthew Spangler (Laura) of Milton, Mark Spangler, of Philadelphia, and John Spangler III, (Rita), of Williamsport; one sister, Frances Jane (Button) Williams, of Jersey Shore; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Jones, John Spangler IV, Stephanie Paulhamus, and Logan Spangler; one great-grandson, Blake Spangler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Shaw Funeral Home, 400 N. Front St., Milton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 100 Mahoning St., Milton, with the Rev. Thomas Glasoe officiating. Burial will be in Milton Cemetery.
