James Clancy was a farmer and a blacksmith, a trade he learned from his father. His mother, Sarah Bowman Clancy, died when he was very young. He, with his father, step-mother Elizabeth and sister Rebecca, moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois before 1860. He served as a sargent in the Civil War in the 123rd mounted infantry, Company C, from Aug. 9, 1862 to June 28, 1865. In 1868 he married Miss Nancy Crawford. Together they raised 7 children, six grew to adulthood.
