He was the son of Elijah Newnham (ca 1765-1850) and Susannah Thorpe (ca 1765-Oct 22, 1847), devout Methodists. He was murdered by Arthur Stanhope with an ax. Stanhope was convicted of Manslaughter in the June 1839 court session of Clark Co. and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Churchwell may be buried next to the Boone graveyard near Pilot View and Schollsville, Clark Co., KY within 100 yards of Elijah's old cabin. Elijah and most of his family moved to Pike Co., IL in 1839 except for son John Newnham/Newnam/Newman who stayed in KY and son Morris who went to IL around 1845. Churchwell's court records are missing from Clark Co., but as his death was a capital crime they may be in Frankfort. His funeral was preached by Rev William B. Landrum, a traveling Methodist preacher, on Sept 22, 1839. The community in which he lived was known as Old Buckeye but that no longer exists so the Newnhams lived in an area bordered by Schollsville, Indian Old Fields, and Pilot View. His father and most of his family spelled their name Newnham, but some of his relatives spelled it Newman or Newnam or variations therof.
