Scott Michael Matthews

April 11, 1952 ~ March 5, 2016

Raised in Eugene, Oregon, Scott graduated from Henry D. Sheldon High School in 1970 where he was on the wrestling and football teams during his sophomore and junior years. He studied chemical engineering at Oregon State University at Corvallis for two years and he also briefly attended the University of Oregon at Eugene before moving to Fairbanks, Alaska in the mid-1970's. He lived in Fairbanks until December of 2015.

In his younger years, Scott enjoyed working on motorcycles and cars and converting the old cars into street rods with his friends. He was a 1950-60's rock & roll music fan.

Even though he drew a favorable draft lottery number, he was an anti-Vietnam War activist.

Scott was an avid reader and was interested in politics. He was an expert gardener in Fairbanks, growing vegetables and flowers by maintaining his own greenhouses. Having been a Boy Scout as a youth, he enjoyed camping and fishing wherever he went.

Scott Matthews had battled cancer for three years before he died at the home of his daughter in Berkeley, California. He was survived by his beloved only child, Claire Eileen. He was also survived by his younger siblings: Debbie and Jay.
