Rasmus was born near Christiania, Norway in the province of Modum. He was a fairly well-to-do farmer of southern Norway, where most of the tillable land is located. Fertile land, available for agriculture, is rather scarce in Norway, for less than 4% of the land is under cultivation. Rumors concerning the opportunities in America reached Modum and there was much discussion about the advantages and drawbacks of America in comparison to Norway. The land in America was very fertile, cheap and inviting. In 1869, Rasmus and his family (including wife Ann Margrete Kristoffersdatter) emigrated from Norway. Upon their arrival in New York, the family immediately set out for the West, travelling by train to Grand Meadow, Minnesota where they settled. He moved to Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1869 where he farmed. Later he moved to Fertile, Minnesota where his sons Nels & Christopher lived.
