Mary Adelia Strong was born on 28 April 1849 to Samson and Fanny (Keller) Strong near the village of West Mansfield in Logan County, Ohio. The family of nine moved to Iowa in a covered wagon when Mary was six. She grew up as a Free Will Baptist in the limestone house her father built on their farm in Tama County. In 1863, her father Samson died of disease while serving with the Iowa Voluntary Infantry during the Civil War.

On 17 July 1868, Mary married Elisha Richards in Tama County, Iowa. The couple had nine children and 49 grandchildren, the majority of whom were born and died in Iowa. Mary lived to attend the weddings of only three of her children. She died at age 45 in LeGrand Township in Marshall County in 1895.
