He attended the University of Maine and was the captain of his baseball team there. He served 31 years in the Medical Service Corps of the US Army, 25th Infantry Division, during the Vietnam War. His military awards include the Purple Heart; Bronze Star; and Soldier's Medal.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ailene Elizabeth Clark Otterstedt, and their son, Mark Alan Otterstedt. He was survived by his son; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visitation and funeral service were held at Beall Funeral Home, Bowie, MD on Saturday, April 23, 2016. Interment August 23, 2016.
