James Byrd, 83, of 809 Indiana Ave., was dead on arrival Friday at Charleston General Hospital after a long illness.
He was owner and operator of the former Byrd Moving & Transfer Service, and a native of Jackson County.
Surviving: wife, Virginia; daughters, Mrs. Vernie Doughty of Winfield, Mrs. Esther Warner of Charleston, Miss Angeline Byrd, Miss Pearlie Byrd of Dunbar, Mrs. Virginia Gay of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Hattie DeMartini of Santa Rosa, Calif., Misses Georgiana, Mary and Correnia Byrd at home; sons, Lakco of Ashville, N.C., Charmco of Melbourne, Fla., Joe of Cleveland, Ohio, Jimmy with the U.S. Air Force in Minot, N.D., Alonzo with the Army in Germany, Samuel, Andrew, Henry of Charleston; sister, Mrs. Lola Myers of Charleston; 18 grandchildren.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday in Bartlett-Burdette Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
