Whitney was founder of the General Electric Research Laboratory in Schenectady. The company made several discoveries that were fundamental in television, radar, radio and other electronic developments.

Known as 'Dean of Industrial Research," Whitney began his work in 1900 in barn behind the home of Dr. Charles P. Steinmetz's - the barn was later converted into a laboratory. Whitney held several awards for scientific achievement and appeared several times on radio.
