George "Douglas" Bailey, age 50, died Friday, June 23, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, in Florence, Ala., after a long battle with lung cancer. Douglas was born in Villa Rica, Ga., at the old Villa Rica Hospital, on July 31, 1955. He later moved to Florence, Ala., where he met his wife, Cathy.

He is the son of the late James Olin Bailey Sr. and Ruth M. (George) Bailey, of Villa Rica, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Watson, of Florence, Ala.; three brothers, "Jimmy" James O. Bailey Jr., of Dallas, Ga., Andy Earl Bailey Sr., of Chickamauga, Ga., and "Bill" Perry O. Bailey, of Tuscumbia, Ala.; two daughters, Heather and LaJean, of Rome, Ga.; six grandchildren; extended family.

Douglas served in the U.S. Navy and worked as a certified welder at the Pascagula, Miss., shipyard, until he became medically disabled. Douglas was a member, singer and musician at the Heritage Fellowship Baptist, in Leighton, Ala.

Douglas was a gifted musician and songwriter and wrote and recorded many gospel and country songs, such as "It's You That I Love" and "Wrong Track," sung by Cody Lyons and recorded in New York. Also, "Here in the USA," from the CD "New York, New York."

Douglas could play the guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and drums. His favorite guitar collection included his Gibson and his black and white Fender Telecaster. From time to time, he was a featured guest with the Songwriters Showcase.

Douglas formed and played with many classic rock and country bands as well as gospel groups over the years.

transferred to Villa Rica, Ga., by Spry Funeral Home to J. Collins Funeral Home. Burial will be at the family lot at Powell's Chapel Cemetery, in Villa Rica, Ga.
