Lawrence was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence J. Thornton Jr. of Lancaster New York, dear brother of Mrs. Mario Martinez of Miami Florida; Margaret S. Thornton and the dear brother of William M. Thornton both of Lancaster.

He was a graduate of Lancaster High School and later attended Miami-Date Junior College, in Miami Florida before entering service with the US Air Force and completed his basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas.

SSgt Thornton was on this third tour of Southeast Asia, stationed at the U Tapeo Air Force Base in Thailand assigned as a crew chief of a refueling aircraft with the Strategic Air Command where he died on June 7, 1972.

SSgt Thornton was buried with Full Military Honors in the St Mary's Cemetery, Lancaster.
