2016 obituary. CANDIA, N.H. and formerly of Portland - Richard (Dick) J. Haley Sr. passed away on Jan. 21, 2016, after a long illness. Born on Nov. 17, 1931, to William P. Haley and Maybelle E. Jackman, he was a graduate of Cheverus High School and later received his BA degree from St. Francis Xavier University in Antiginish, Nova Scotia. In July, 1954, he married Bernice M. (Bunny) Landry of Augusta, a marriage that lasted 55 years. Drafted into the U.S. Army, he served at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. After leaving the army, he, along with his brother Bill, joined the family business popularly known as Haley the Mover. He remained there until his retirement in 1986. As part of the moving business, he was a longtime treasurer of the Maine Truck Owners Association. He would later become its president. After his retirement he became a swap driver, driving for Wiley Pontiac, Brown Pontiac-Oldsmobile, Portland Saab, Portland Volvo, and Pape Chevrolet, but mostly for Bill Dodge Auto Group. He was a swap driver for 19 years. Dick was a member of the Portland Lions Club for over 40 years, serving as the editor of the weekly newsletter for over 20 years. He also worked with the Portland Catholic Charities, Diocesan Bureau of Human Relations Services, and the Blind Children's Resource Center. In the community, he served on several United Fund campaigns. He was also a board member of the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce, heading the committee that originated the "Eggs 'n Issues" program, later becoming vice president of that board. In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his brothers Norman L. Haley, William P. Haley Jr., and Raymond Haley; his sister Jeanette Reynolds; and his wife Bunny. There will be no wake. A private funeral service will be held in the spring.
