Amy Mathilda (Nyland) Larson was born on November 11, 1918, in Friendship Township of Yellow Medicine County to Olaus and Ida (Berg) Nyland. It was the end of World War I and bells were ringing around the country. She was baptized and confirmed at Spring Creek Lutheran Church. She graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1936. On April 3, 1937, she was united in marriage to Velmin Larson in Hazel Run, Minnesota.
Amy spent most of her early married life working side-by-side helping Velmin with the farm work. She was an avid gardener and canned and froze much of her produce she had grown. She was very handy with the sewing machine and made many articles of clothing. Her favorite relaxing pastime was to play Pinochle with her family members.
She had a change of pace when she decided to go to work at the Clarkfield Care Center and then the local hospital as a Nurse's Aid.
Being a faithful member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church, she took great pride in furnishing chickens for the Harvest Fest when cream chicken became the main specialty. Going to church and Sunday school every Sunday was never a question - it was as automatic as the sun rising and setting.
Amy and Velmin bought a little house in Clarkfield and moved in to make it their home in 1979. She spent a lot of time in the backyard with her flowers and garden. Velmin passed away on December 12, 1992. Amy continued living in her house until she felt it was getting too much to take care of and moved to Valhalla Apartments where she spent three and one-half years. Medical problems were becoming apparent so she entered the Clarkfield Care Center in February of 2010 and fought her battle with dementia until her death.
She is survived by her children: Arlene (Ardell) Benson, Verda Carlson, Dennis (Maren) Larson, and Jeanie (Michael) Anderson; eight grandchildren: Bradley, Brian, Bruce, Barbara, Melinda, Melissa, Melanie, and Scott; 15 great- grandchildren: Shyanne, Dylan, Dalton, Daniel, Jon, Gavin, Jameson, Charlie, Kooper, Jack, Madilynn, Nicholas, Brittany, Emily, and Alec; one great-great grandchild: Hadley; a brother, Olaf Nyland of Alexandria; a sister, Esther Donner of Montevideo; and several nieces and nephews.
Amy was preceded in death by her husband, Velmin; two grandsons: Timothy Reynolds and Jason Anderson; her parents; a brother, Orville; and sisters: Alice Severson and Agnes Borgendale.
Blessed be her memory!
