Bob was born to John Newton and Maude Hester (Miles) McClanahan at Armstrong, Iowa. He grew up in Des Moines. He was interested in aviation from his teens and joined the Naval Air Corps, serving in both WWII and the Korean conflict. He maintained his private pilot's license until he was 85.
In 1957 he moved to Grand Marais, MN where he met his future wife, Hazel Agnes Berglund, at the Baptist Church. They married June 15, 1963 in the church where they met. He was employed by Erie Mining but spent many hours at the bowling alley he'd built for community family entertainment. He was very active in the Free Church as well.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Elton, Richard and Eldon, sister, Kathryn. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, daughter Colleen, son Robert, 6 grandchildren and one great granddaughter, many nieces and nephews.
