Isaac E Dillon was a veteran of both the Mexican War and the Civil War. He served from 1846 to 1847 during the Mexican War, acquiring a land bounty and pension for that service. Later he attained the rank of Sergent during the Civil War, after entering as a private in the State of Ohio. He served in the 15th Ohio Infantry.

His grave is currently unmarked, but efforts have begun to document his service record and to have a VA marker placed on his burial site by one of his great-great grandchildren.

Many of his children migrated to Oklahoma, but Archbishop Dillon, his oldest son, stayed in Rice County, Kansas. He is buried next to his wife Minnie Clarinda McMonigal.
