James McCracken was born 14 Dec 1754. His birth location is unknown. He is the son of James McCracken.
James McCracken (the father) had a land warrant issued on 22 September 1766 for 300 acres located on the south side of the Broad River, in what was then believed to be in Mecklenburg County, NC. Years later this land was proven to be in Union County, SC. James McCracken survey for this 300 acre land grant tract was completed on 10 January 1768 for this land on the south side of Broad River in South Carolina.
During the American Revolutionary War James married Mary Smith on 22 Jan 1779 at Abbeville. Their first born child John was born in November 1779. James McCracken (the son) served for 145 days duty as a horseman from 7 May 1780 to 25 June 1781 in Captain Benjamin Jolly's Company, Colonel Thomas Brandon's Regiment. Captain Brandon was from Union County.
James McCracken (the son) on 18 May 1786 from Broderiver (Broad River), Union County, South Carolina received a payment due him for his military service during the American Revolutionary War.
After the birth of their seventh child in the Union District of South Carolina, James and Mary moved their growing family to the Mississippi Territories. Here, in what is now Madison Co., Alabama, five more children were added to the family. James is listed on the 1810, 1811 and 1816 Tax Rolls of Madison Co., Alabama.
After relocating to the Mississippi Territories, he took part in the Florida Expedition and in an expedition against the Creek Indians.
James McCracken died 8 Aug 1824 in Madison County, Alabama. According to his grandson Rufus McCracken he was buried at Sand Mountain. It is also plausible he died at Lawrence County, Tennessee or he was at a later date reinterned to Lawrence County, Tennessee.
By the time of the 1850 US Census the widow, Mary Smith McCracken can be found living with her oldest son John McCracken at Lawrence County, TN. Mary had previously been living with her children Nimrod McCracken, Anson McCracken and Hannah McCracken Kimsey in Jackson and Platte counties in western Missouri.
