Joel Richards, Jr., age 81, passed away on February 6, 2001 at Ogden Regional Medical Center of pneumonia.

He was born October 18, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Joel Richards, Sr., and Georgina Felt Richards. Joel served an LDS mission to Great Britain from 1939 to 1941 and finished his mission in Canada, due to the war.

He married Jessalyn (Lyn) Hillier on September 4, 1942 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He was a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, spent two and a half years in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Joel graduated from the University of Utah with a BA Degree in Business. He was active in the LDS Church, and was the first bishop of the Second Ward in Roy. He has served in many callings, including Stake High Councilman and High Priest Group Leader. He was also the former President of the Emigration Chapter of the SUP.

He was General Manager of New York Life in Yakima, Washington; Denver, Colorado; Boise, Idaho; and Salt Lake City. He was also former President of Salt Lake Life Underwriters. Joel's special interests included singing in the ward choir, water skiing, and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Jessalyn, of Ogden; five daughters, Lynda (Frank) Badger, Puyallup, Washington; Sheryl (Steven) Bailey, Layton; Valerie (Bruce) Gardner, Puyallup; Pamela (David) Collier, Vancouver, Washington; and Debra (Bill) Bozung, Highland; two sons, Joel (Cathy) Richards III, Houston, Texas; and Scott (Mary) Richards, Boise; forty grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Also survived by three brothers, Wayne Richards, Salt Lake City; Brent Richards, Bakersfield, California; and Elliott Richards, Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Fellows.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2001 at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South,mwhere friends may call on Friday, February 9, 2001 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.
Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery.
