The third child of nine born to Annis Nichols & Lahira Barber. Though he was born in Canada, he appears in Californis census records as born in New York & one (1910 Boone Co., NE) shows him as Massachusetts. Almost all census records give his YOB as 1836-38. It's possible his monument may be in error.
Never married, Heman moved to California in the 1870's. He's listed in the 1875 Surprise Valley, Medoc Co., CA Great Register, the 1880 Cedarville, Medoc Co., CA census (living with his brother Truman & family) & the 1888 Eagleville, Medoc Co., CA Great Register. In 1910 he was living with his brother Linas & family in Boone Co., NE.
