Edna Mathilda Miller, age 94, passed peacefully from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 27, surrounded by her son Harry, and the caring staff at Bridger Rehab and Care Center in Bozeman, MT. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 14, at the Gardiner Community Church. Coffee fellowship will follow the service. Interment will be held at Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston at a later date.

Edna was born to Norwegian immigrants Johannes and Martha (Balgaard) Lyng during a snow storm on a farm 8 miles from Battle Lake, Minnesota, on February 29, 1920.

As was the case with many born in those days, Edna spent much of her life living in material poverty, and although she experienced a significant amount of emotional and physical pain, rarely was a complaint heard. It was truly her faith that sustained and motivated her throughout her life.

It was possibly her father's conversion and prayers during the last year of his life, and vision of Jesus as he was dying, that had the greatest impact on Edna's early faith. As a teenager, she stayed home from school and helped her mother care for him until he died in 1935. She then attended high school in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and graduated in 1940.

After graduation, she moved to Lowell, Washington, where she met and eventually married Chauncey Miller on September 1,1943. Looking for work, they moved quite often and had four children; only two of whom survived past the first few days. Harry was born in 1948 in Wolf Point, Montana; and Renita was born in Everett, Washington, in 1953. Later that year, the family moved again and settled along the banks of the Yellowstone River north of Corwin Springs, Montana, built a home, raised their family, and enjoyed their grandchildren. Chauncey passed away in 1990. They had been married 47 years

After Chauncey's death, Edna continued to help care for Chauncey's older sister, Florence, until her death in 1992. She then moved to Livingston in 1993, to be closer to her daughter, Renita (Davis) and family after Harry and his family moved from Corwin Springs to work with a mission organization.

While Edna endured the passing of several infants, her parents, her siblings, and her spouse, it was probably the loss of her daughter, Renita, to cancer in 2002, that had the biggest impact on her. Still, she put her own depression and loneliness aside and focused her energies on ministering to others by volunteering for the Livingston Widowed Persons Service and Senior Companion Program for several years. She also conducted church services on Sunday mornings at the Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center for a time. She was dearly loved by all those whose lives she touched with her compassion and love.

Edna fell and badly fractured her back in October of 2009, and lived the rest of her years with her son Harry and wife Linda, near Gardiner, Montana. While she had always been a "pray-er", when her physical injuries and age made getting out much more difficult, Edna made prayer for her family, friends, and others her primary focus, presenting thousands of requests before the throne of God, and getting great results, including some healings. She spent many, many hours on the phone praying for and with Granddaughter Rachel over the past several years, having a big impact on Rachel's life. It was a blessing to be on her prayer list, and many people asked her to pray for them.

Throughout her life she greatly enjoyed her friends and family, and was known and appreciated for her warm hospitality and great cooking. She played the organ and accordion in her younger years. Always a hard worker, her "career" included such things as teaching school, processing wild game, and driving truck for the National Park Service in Yellowstone for several years until she retired in 1981. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, games, helping others, and relationships with her various Bible study groups and church families in Gardiner and Livingston.

She is survived by her son, Harry (Linda) Miller of Gardiner; son-in-law Jack Davis of Livingston; grandchildren JC (Jessica) Davis of Livingston; Leslie Davis of Portland, Oregon; Sarah (Alex) Castelli of Maringa, Brazil; and Rachel (Paul) Colvin of Brumley, Missouri; great-grandchildren Chauncey and Trevor Davis, Aiden, Amarissa, and Aaron Compton, and Gabrieli Castelli of Brazil, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Donations may be sent in memory of Edna to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BillyGraham.org for info); the Senior Center in Livingston, MT; or to the Senior Companion Program, P.O. Box 1717, Helena, MT 59624.

Arrangements are under the care of Franzen-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in Livingston.
