Howard Powell Owen

Howard, age 92, was born August 15, 1919 in Durango, Colorado and peacefully went home to be with his Heavenly Father on October 29, 2011. Howard lived in Sultan, WA for the last 37 years.
He is survived by wife and best friend, Verna; son, Peter; five step-sons; two step-daughters; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Howard grew up in Colorado, living on several ranches between Bayfield and Durango. He graduated from high school in 1937. He served in the United States Army from 1940 to 1962. In early 1943 Howard's unit arrived close to Miline Bay, New Guinea where they started a two year trek that ended in Luzon, Philippines. His fields of service were in the South Pacific Theater, Alaska, Austria and Korea.
After retiring from the Army, Howard worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 13 plus years, when he again retired in 1976. Howard said, "The greatest day in my life was February 20, 1983 when Jesus saved me". There was a time when I wouldn't admit what a "sinner" I was. But my dishonesty made me so miserable and filled my days with frustration. My strength evaporated like water on a hot sunny day until I finally admitted all my sins to God and stopped trying to hide them.
Remember, confession is telling God you did the thing He saw you do. He doesn't need to hear it as much as you need to say it. Whether it's too small to be mentioned or too big to be forgiven, isn't yours to decide. Your task is to be honest.
God does not "send" people to Hell, He simply honors their choice. Nowhere does scripture teach that innocent people are condemned. People do not go to Hell, the self-centered do. So how could a loving God send people to Hell? He doesn't, He simply honors the choice of the sinners.
Growing old can be dangerous, the trail is treacherous and the pitfalls are many. One is wise to be prepared, you know it's coming, it's not like God kept the process a secret. It's not as if no one has ever done it before. Look around you, you have ample opportunities to prepare and ample case studies to consider. If growing old catches you by surprise, don't blame God, He gave you plenty of warning and also plenty of advice.
My favorite scripture is Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight". How simple it sounds, but so hard to do. God Bless you! See you all soon!
The memorial service for Howard Powell Owen will be held Saturday, November 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Monroe Foothills Foursquare Church.
