Karen Mae Morton was known by many Mama Cakes or Grandma Cakes, unfortunately, has started her journey to the spirit world on December 28, 2016 at the Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, SD. She was a very kind, curing, sensitive, and amazing wife, mother, grandmother, auntie granddaughter and niece to a lot of Family, Adopted (Bunka) Family, and very dearly close friends. Everyone she had encountered her made them family and was a very talkative and an open woman that had a lot to share and a lot of great advice to give.
Karen Mae (Cedar Face) Morton was brought into this world on January 17, 1956 in the Windy City of Chicago, IL to Paul and Edith (Red Shirt) (Cedar Face). Shortly thereafter returning back to the Pine Ridge Area late 1960's. Karen loved many things in life and she was an avid and excelled fancy shawl dancer in her earlier years, and she was an amazing artist by making her regalia to other beaded items. On her experiences with her dancing she had created a lot of lasting and long friendships with individuals she held close to her heart.
Karen attended high school at Holy Rosary Mission where she laid her beautiful brown yes on the love of her life Tommy Ray Morton, later she had attended Oglala Community School (OCS); which was later changed to Pine Ridge High School. She was an avid and strong supporter of the PRHS Thorpe’s and was commonly referred as Mama Thorpe along with Papa Thorpe. She known for her outgoing support of the mighty Red, White and Black! After High School Karen tended Oglala Lakota College (OLC) majoring in Nursing and in her later years went back to study Early Education and Business Administration.
Karen married the love of her life Tom on February 14, 1976 and were happily married in a union of love that was set for eternity. Out of this union, Karen gave birth to her children. Eldest Roxeine “Toni” Morton, Eldest son Cody Morton, and her baby Casey Morton. Karen and Tom had a daughter that had passed away shortly after birth Tiffany Morton.
Karen spent her life as an active, dedicated and loving wife, mother, and especially grandmother. Her grandchildren were her life, she had raised each and every single one of her grand babies since they were born by staying home and raising them. She was the epitome of generosity and kind-heartedness —she had many and numerous adopted children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Karen always had a warm and caring home to welcome anyone that may need the warmth of family, her and Tom’s door was open to anyone that needed them. She was also a very loving sister and aunt to that was known for her good home cooked meals and dinners.
Karen had experienced a great loss in her life on December 26, 2014 after losing the love of her, her husband of 47 years Tommy Ray Morton, that had succumbed to cancer. They were close and loved each other unconditionally and were inseparable. It was a hard time and she had grieved his passing. Her children know that she is with him now -living happily looking over them.
Karen is survived by sons, Cody (Cedar) Morton of Garnerville, NV and Casey '(Hugh) Morton of Pine Ridge, SD; daughters, Roxeine Morton and Breyauni Morton both of Pine Ridge, South Dakota; brothers, Paul Cedar Face and Fredrick Cedar Face of Pine Ridge Clara Cedar Face of Albuquerque, NM, Frances Cedar Face, and Mary Cedar Face of Pine Ridge, SD; and grandchildren, Shaniah, Shaylene, Shyleigh, and Marvin Richard, III, Tommy, Tamaya, and Teylauni, and Takoda Morton; and Koty LeBeau-Janis.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Edith; loving husband, Tommy Ray Morton; daughter, Tiffany Morton; and brothers Edward Morton, and Charles Cedar Face.
