Richard "Dick" McClure, age 68, of Halliday, formerly of Portal, died Wednesday, Sept. 9,1987, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Minot. His funeral was held Saturday, Sept. 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Bowbells. Burial followed in the Bowbells Cemetery. Officiating for the service was Rev. John Amundson; organist was Mrs. Muriel Johnson with Mr. and Mrs. Elton Peterson, vocalists. Active casketbearers included Brady Kelly, Richard Kelly, Harold Swenson, Ernest Swenson, Larry Swenson and Ronald McClure.
He was born on December 7, 1918, in Burke County, a son of Charles and Lena (Muske) McClure. He was raised on the family farm near Bowbells and graduated from Bowbells High School in 1936. He was married to Edith A. Swenson on July 8, 1940, on the Gust Swenson farm. He worked for the Soo Line railroad until entering the U. S. Air Force in 1943. Following his discharge in 1946, he returned to work for the Soo Line Railroad until his retirement in 1978.
He served as the Portal Chief of Police from 1966 to 1972 and was a member of the Portal Fire Department, the Portal American Legion, the International Curling Club at Portal, and had coached Legion baseball for many years. At the present time he was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Halliday.
Surviving are his wife, Edith of Halliday; sisters, Lorraine Kelly of Bowbells, and Yvonne Pommier of Longview, WA; brother, Neal of Bismarck, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Thompson-Larson Funeral home of Bowbells was in charge of arrangements.
